According to Margaret Fonow, a feminist scholar, there are a number of ways to think about difference and [the] same differences can also be the basis of stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination and it is this negative use of difference that alarms feminists (Reading Women’s Lives, p. 91).
According to Intersecting Identities, stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination tend to be based on interconnecting differences when an individuals identity is defined (intersecting identities).
Please draw on the readings/viewings to write a critical journal entry about your own intersecting identity. This means you are not simply a man or a woman; you are also defined in relation to your race, class, sexuality, disability, religion, and/or ethnicity. Some of those factors may sometimes put you at a disadvantageous position in the workplace, with access to opportunities and financial resources, etc. When writing the entry, please ask yourself How do the readings and viewing “Intersecting Identities” help me understand that my identity is shaped by multiple intertwined factors. Have I ever encountered any prejudice or discrimination based on my difference? If so, what may have been the cause(s)? If not, could it be a privilege associated with my race, class, gender, sexuality, and/or ethnicity? Those are only some questions for your consideration. You may address other relevant questions in the entry.
