The portable mp3/mp4 player phenomenon and the subscription-streaming model have supported a transformation in the way the world acquires and listens to music. Both models allow for immediate access to vast libraries of music (as opposed to the limitations of a single CD). New capabilities from mp3 players include the ability to download music from the Internet and access it immediately and the ability to create individual playlists and/or access shuffle mode listening within your library. New capabilities from streaming services include broader access to music without having to purchase individual pieces and access to collaborative filtering.
Besides the specific changes in the culture of listening, the iPod type phenomenon and the streaming services suggest responses to some of the larger issues in musicology. Here are some questions to consider, based in part on the reading. You may choose to address all of these, or some of these along with other considerations from the reading.

What issues arise at the intersection of music and machine? Does the mp3 player type experience or the streaming experience alter the nature and status of the notion of musical authenticity? Do they alter the relationship between the experience of recorded music and live music events? Do these new forms of music consumption have a positive or negative affect on music appreciation? Does the success of the mp3 player type experience and streaming services simply reflect our cultural condition or does it make an active contribution, actually helping to construct our society?
Your grade will be based on the organization of your paper, the appropriate use of examples from some of the readings, and the clarity and depth of your thoughts.
