Discussion 1 Scenario

Tom is entering his freshen year at a new high school, after his family moved due to his dad’s job. Tom is excited about the new challenge but also anxious over being bullied as he has been in the past due to his weight. He is in the overweight group for his age and height but close to being labeled obese. He’s a smart guy with many interests, including academic and sports-related activities. But he loves to eat and knows he does it sometimes when he is nervous. Usually, he makes friends easily, but again, wonders how the new kids will respond to him.
Tom’s parents are supportive and loving, both also having to deal with weight issues. His Mom provides good meals, but usually also has sweet baked snacks around for after school hunger, as well as dessert with most meals.
Within your group, discuss the following questions: Support your thoughts with web sources.
1. How serious is the obesity issue in America today? What are the current statistics?
2. What are the effects of obesity and bullying on one’s mental health and self-perception?
3. How does obesity affect our society overall?
4. What advice do you have for Tom as he enters his high school experience?
5. Any personal experiences you would like to share that could impact the discussion of this scenario?
