Using your “sociological imagination,” explain the various ways in which the transmission of cultural norms and practices in educational institutions is a complex process in diverse societies?
Your response must include:
concepts from the chapters on Educational and Religious Institutions in your textbook,
at least one theoretical perspective (Conflict, Functionalist or Symbolic Interactionist), in addition to the concepts described in the films “Amish Education” and “The Business of Education” to evaluate the ways in which educational institutions foster existing norms, customs and social inequalities.
Your evaluation may also consider what cultural norms are being transmitted, what types of cultural capital are evident within the various schools and cultures portrayed in the films in addition to the influence of social class and how it influences access to education.
