Assignment:
The following items in American history helped to enact the Fair Housing Act:
1. The Civil Rights Act of 1866
2. The U.S. Supreme court case in 1896 known as Plessy v. Ferguson
3. The U.S. Supreme court case in 1954 known as Brown v. the Board of Education
4. The U.S. Supreme court case in 1968 prohibiting certain types of discrimination Jones v. Mayer Co.
5. The Fair Housing Act of 1988

The assignment has three components as follows:
(Be sure to prepare an introduction paragraph to your report rather than just answering questions
and to have a proper header including your name and class (REA###, section #####; Time: ##:##).
Lastly, format counts, and proper citation of your research. Use alpha-numeric formatting for the
report sections.) (e.g. I. Civil Right Act of 1866.)
A. For each of the items 1-5 above prepare a written narrative containing, at a minimum, the following: (10 points)
a. Who or What initiated the Act, or case.
b. Prepare a summary of each item to enable the reader to get a general idea of the
circumstances leading up to the act or case.
c. Prepare a summary of the act or case and its outcome.
d. Prepare a personal interpretation of your findings to let the reader know if you think the
result(s) of the act or case met the goal of enacting or being adjudicated.
(Note: You are NOT taking a political position, you are simply drawing a conclusion based
on the facts you found and described).
e. When describing the Fair Housing Act, include an explanation of who benefits from the act and who enforces the act. Also, describe the concepts of Steering, Blockbusting, and Redlining.
B. Identify at least one additional U.S. court case (any court) that pertains to anything you discussed in your report relating to items 1-5 above. You are looking for any case brought against another person or entity for discrimination. Be sure to discuss the items indicated in a-d above (in item A).
C. Prepare a conclusion of what your findings mean to you. This is a summary of over 150 years of civil rights acts and law suits. There is no right or wrong answer and your conclusions are what count.
Lastly, address any ideas that you may have to help facilitate the goals and objectives discussed above.
