Shawshank Project Intro to Corrections – CRJ 113 After watching the movie “The Shawshank Redemption”, write a paper pointing out the important issues in corrections that we discussed in class or that are mentioned in your book. I am not going to put a required page amount on this project, but I do expect that it should take at least a couple of pages if you discuss an issue and explain how the movie portrays that issue. Some of the issues that must be discussed are listed below. 1.Explain how society’s handling of offenders has changed historically, from ancient times to the present. Explain how the harsh conditions of Shawshank prison are still better to various punishments used during ancient times. 2.Define the contemporary goals of sentencing and cite examples of each during the movie. (I’ll give you a clue – deterrence, incapacitation, retribution, and rehabilitation.) 3.Discuss ethical issues as they pertain to the field of corrections. Take examples of ethical issues from the movie and discuss them.
