Emily Dickinson: The Sky is low– The Clouds are mean. “The sky is low– The clouds are mean. A Travelling flake of Snow Across a Barn or through a Rut Debates if it will go.” This line makes a setting for the poem with Cloudy-Wintery Skys and speaks of a piece of snow in a human like way stating that it is floating around not sure which way it should go. Then a “A Narrow Wind complains all day How someone treated him. Nature, like us, is sometimes caught without her Diadem.” This line compares nature in a human like way stating that not every day is our best, and we all struggle sometimes. I believe this poem compares Humans and Nature as one, they both have like characteristics. This poem was written in 1866 which was the year that the United States Congress Passed the Civil Rights Act of 1866. This was one of the first rights to protect African Americans. I feel that this part of history could definitely been seen as cold, mean, and confusing. 2. Martin Espada: Of the Threads That Connect the Stars This poem uses imagery to describe what the grandfather, Father, and son see when they see the “stars.” The father who grew up in Brooklyn could only see Smoke, Factories, and Junkyards and that is where he found comfort. The Grandfather and the son were able to see the Galaxy and the Stars. This Poem definitely suggest that the father is seperated from Nature. He is conflicted by his memories and is unable to see the beautiful galaxy, rather he holds on to the memories of Riots he was raised in during 1966. In Robert Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”, he is using the proverbial road to discuss doing something unexpected. He is saying that doing what no one has done yet, or going against the norm, was the best decision. In this poem, he isn’t making the person a part of nature but is using nature to help set the tone of the decision for the human. I don t think he is trying to manipulate words in this poem, he is using the road, the grass, the undergrowth as metaphors for where the person is going. Going down the path less traveled is unknown, mysterious, the path wouldn’t be beaten it would be overgrown. However, going down that path would lead to personal growth. Frost. “The Road Not Taken.” Mays pp. 511-512. William Blake’s “The Lamb” is comparing the lamb to God. It is an allegory, God created nature, nature is God. It is expressing how everything is created in God’s image, so God is in everything. He describes the characteristics of the lamb and illustrates the softness and divinity of the creature. I think he is trying to relate the divine to something tangible for the people of the time to visualize. In contrast, he wrote, “The Tyger” which is the opposite of the lamb. The Tyger is not gentle and soft, he is mighty, fire, and breeds fear. The lamb was meant to be a visual for God, I think that the Tyger is meant to be Lucifer. He asks in the poem if the lamb knows who made thee, that he saw who made him. That would be an allegory for the creation, Lucifer resided in Heaven until he was banished. He would know the lamb because he knows the creator. Blake, William. “The Lamb” and “The Tyger.” Mays pp. 588-589. ***Read the document attached labeled: Part 1 and Part 2 Instructions*** ***I have attached the Nature Poems in the document attached labeled: Week 10 Readings*** Reading and Research Writing Class: Classmates Discussion Responses Part 3: Use at least 100 words for this Part (Respond to classmate’s Post) Post By: Ronald S. When looking into the writing, understanding the psychological concept of why spoken behave in the manner they do was very interesting. Therefore, I chose the short story, “A Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allen Poe. I think it will be intriguing to learn and write about revenger and its psychological aspect on the mind of Montresor in a Cask of Amontillado. I have a few sources to pull from but one of my key sources is The Complicated Psychological Science by Jaffe. This will help me to look into the mind of Montressor, one of the main characters in the story. Montresor’s unreliability overrides the rational consideration of evidence, such as particular occurrences of insult, that would necessarily precede any guilty sentence in a non-Poe world. “The Cask of Amontillado” takes subjective interpretation—the fact that different people interpret the same things differently—to its horrific endpoint. Another source I used was www.sparknotes.com/lit/poestories, (Links to an external site.) it gives you a little more information on the story by Poe.
