The completed paper will NOT be a summary of the group, but rather will argue something about how that individual/organization engaged issues of empowerment and self-determination. Students will use primary sources and student analysis of those primary sources to infer what their chosen person/group thought about self determination. Do NOT simply restate all the things your person/group did – that is NOT the assignment. Rather, think about what they did not say that you can infer from the primary source documents. Students will use Chicago style formatting and produce an original paper that uses at least a few primary sources which may be contextualized by scholarly secondary sources. And please be sure you have a clear strong thesis (none of that “Individual X pursued self-determination in his own way” sort of vague garbage). This video on how to write a thesis might help you to craft a quality thesis on your topic–it must argue something!
Please submit a complete draft that reflects your best possible work. This should be a complete five to seven page draft in Chicago Style formatting. Your title page does NOT count as one of your five to seven pages. You do NOT need a bibliography because your footnotes should have all the citation information (and if you do write a bibliography anyhow it does not count as part of your five to seven pages). You should have footnotes (which do count as part of your five to seven pages).
Submit your best work, and we will spend the remainder of the term fine tuning it to be even better!
