The group project for this year will be about the Juno mission that is active around Jupiter and its moons. This was such a fantastic mission to Jupiter with incredible discoveries in addition to technological breakthroughs. Although it was NASA’s plan to end the mission by now, it is currently examining Jupiter’s moons.
Report
The report should use 12-point Times Roman font and with 1.5 line spacing. It should be at least 20 pages long, excluding references. Each group member should write approximately 4 pages of the report. It should be structured into the following 5 sections:
1) Introduction/background/objectives – The Introduction should explain the background understanding that leads up to the next section. This provides background information and history. The Objectives should lay out the rationale for the mission as well as the goals that the mission plans to address.
2) Methods – The Methods explain the instrumentation and how that equipment will serve to achieve the mission objectives.
3) Results – The Results present what is measured and the findings of the mission (the data).
4) Discussion – The discussion debates the data and looks at all options that could have resulted to explain the data, selecting the most likely option and giving the rationale.
5) Conclusions – The Conclusions presents the final decision or conclusion drawn from what was found/discovered. It will explain how your project links into previous understanding and what new discoveries were made. Here you also include the limitations and may suggest what future work could be done (future scope).
Each student in the group will select one of the above sections and be responsible for writing the selected section by themselves. Every section should be about 4 pages of text, giving the report a minimum of 20 pages. A statement must be included in the report to identify which student wrote which section.
The header for each section should be in bold font. Figures and tables should be in an Appendix with Captions that describe each figure or table concisely. In the main report you refer to these figures and tables. Place the figure and table numbers correctly in your Text and the associated Appendix. Figures and Tables should be in numerical order, starting with figures and followed by tables.
Referencing should have a journal style format. Be consistent throughout the reference list. Most geological journals provide a Guide for Authors that explains how to cite papers, books, websites, et cetera. I vary my referencing depending on the journal being targeted but take a look at journal such as GEOLOGY, or Earth Planetary Science Letters, as examples. Keep in mind that the References should not be part of the 20 pages but should be placed in the Appendix. If you use a website, its URL should be cited. It’s not a good idea to use Wikipedia because it is not peer reviewed.
