This is an expository essay. This type, also known as a definition or descriptive essay, is the most basic type of college paper. Expository essays aim only to explain an idea or define a concept, without making an argument. There is no opinion nor attempt to sway the reader. Definition essays are common in academic and research settings. Think of this as what a Communications course paper might require.
