These documents will help you to understand how to develop your draft and what you are expected to accomplish in your revised final paper.
Do not submit a rough draft. This paper will be graded, so make it as complete and polished as you can.
Avoid casual and indirect approaches, such as, “When I thought about writing my paper, I decided I might …” Also, don’t write a couple of pages and then list plans for the final paper.
In other words, don’t submit a draft that talks about the paper. Submit a draft of the paper.
Include an arguable claim supported by relevant sources, properly cited using parenthetical citations, a conclusion and Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA).
You do not have to submit an annotated bibliography with the draft; you do have to submit one with the final paper.
Research Paper Guidelines
Follow these SEI Research Paper Guidelines.
In this course, students will design a semester-long research project that culminates in a research paper. The paper will become part of your final portfolio.
The portfolio also includes a reflective essay and a presentation. The portfolio must earn a grade of C- or better in order to pass the course.
This document outlines guidelines for the paper.
The final paper is an argumentative essay that constitutes original work. That is, students may not submit a paper that they wrote or plans to write for another class.
Research is a multi-faceted process. You are expected to complete all components of the semester-long research project:
Developing research questions and finding credible sources to answer those questions, and
Writing a preliminary research essay,
A project proposal with annotated bibliography,
A research paper draft, and
Revised final paper.
Research is a process: I will not read your research paper draft if I have not read your research project proposal. If you have not submitted a proposal and research paper draft by Week 11, I will assume you do not plan to complete this course.
If you change your topic, you must submit a new proposal.
Content Guidelines
The term project refers to the semester-long process students undertake in developing their individual topics and theses. As an outcome of the project, each student must design and compose a final paper with a discernible thesis that poses an argument, and that integrates relevant and credible source material.
A thesis is defined as a position statement or proposition; a thesis is arguable (offering a debatable point or claim) and supportable (focused, credible, and clear).
The final paper should be at least 2000 words (eight double-spaced pages in 12-point font) and must use and cite five or more relevant, credible sources. Document sources using MLA or APA format. Cite the sources in the body of the paper and in a Works Cited (MLA) or References page (APA).
A note regarding sources: Use a variety of sources. Dictionaries, encyclopedias (including Wikipedia), and the like are not counted toward the required five sources. Use no more than two websites as source material, particularly company (.com) or organizational websites (.org), as these may not contain broad enough perspectives on issues. The Hartness Library is an excellent resource, offering electronic databases with full-text articles, eBooks, films on demand, books, DVDs, and more.
Points will be deducted if the paper does not meet minimum page limit, is not revised, and / or is missing elements: required number of relevant and credible sources, in-text citations, formatting details, annotated bibliography, etc.

PAPER MUST INCLUDE (in this order):

Title page: Title of paper, student name, course title, name of faculty, due date
Table of contents with page numbers (if the paper has section headings)
Body of paper should include parenthetical citations. Length: The body of the paper should comprise at least 2000 words or eight double-spaced pages (based on 12-point font). Title page, abstract, Works Cited/References, and other sections do not count toward word count. Please use a header with your name and page #. For example: Farmer 3.
Works Cited (MLA) or References (APA): This is a list of sources cited within your paper.
Annotated bibliography of three to five sources consulted during research process, whether cited in the paper or not.
Anything else you want to include as documentation of research (such as notes)
