2) Given that we can easily claim that death is a natural and universal process, based on the readings from this unit, how would you respond to Scheper-Hughes contention that “without our cultures, we simply would not know how to feel” (p. 190)?
3) Take a critical stand about a specific value conflict you find compelling
4) Your next task is to weave the readings for this unit around that theme. Follow the conflict all the way through the paper by examining it from various positions and viewpoints offered by the readings.
5) Your discussion MUST include the readings from across these last two units [dying in various settings & grief and bereavement—weeks 6-9].
I have deliberately given you a broad question that should guide your thinking, but it is up to you how you will narrow your focus for the paper.
Remember that the purpose of the essay is to have you synthesize the readings. Consequently, summarizing and discussing each reading separately is not sufficient. While you must be able to indicate that you have worked with the text, the paper should not appear as a checklist of each article. You may state both opinion and personal experience as long as critical reflection and reference to the readings follow.
