This assignment is designed to give the student practice in developing arguments for and against an issue related to professional nursing and to present the arguments in a competent professional manner.
Select your nursing issue topic and submit to instructor for approval by date stated in Course Schedule. (See examples of Issue Topics below). Students may not choose the same topics as their classmates unless using a distinctly different perspective to develop the presentation.
Prepare a Power Point slide presentation of a Nursing Issue based on the evaluation criteria found in the rubric.
Complete a literature search related to your selected issue. Presentation Components
Introduction and overview of issue:
The background and history of the problem or issue, including definition of key terms and a clear definition of the problem or issue.
The development of the background and history of the topic is adequate for the class to gain a clear understanding of the issue.
The issue and key terms are clearly defined.
Arguments in support of the position chosen are logical, persuasive, and well developed:
Develop the arguments supporting your position on the issue. For example, continuing education for professional nurses should be mandatory if nurses are to remain current in their practice.
There is adequate supporting data and data are based on research or recognized sources.
There is evidence of analysis and synthesis of issue.
There are no unfounded assertions.
Arguments against the position chosen or in support of an alternative position are logical, persuasive, and well developed:
Develop the arguments against your position. There are many ways to develop arguments related to a particular issue or topic. One approach to developing reasons to support an opinion about a topic is to consider a variety of perspectives.
There is adequate supporting data and data are based on research or recognized sources.
There is evidence of analysis and synthesis of issue.
There are no unfounded assertions.
Summary:
Summarize arguments and state conclusions.
The summary & conclusions are clear and succinct.
Summary & conclusion is inclusive of key points.
Presentation Style:
The presentation is within the designated time frame – 5-7 minutes.
Appearance and mannerisms are congruent with a professional presentation (poise, speech, and demeanor).
PowerPoint presentation- slides use concise bullets, slides are discussed not read verbatim, and includes approximately 8-12 slides.
