Paper 2 Epistemology: Hume vs. Descartes
Your assignment: In 2-3 pages (double spaced, 11 pt font, regular margins) take a side on whether Hume or Descartes has a superior epistemological theory and why.
Hume and Descartes have what can be characterized as opposing theories and they disagree on many specific points. Your paper should focus on the following point:
Sense impressions: for Hume sense impressions provide us with the foundation for any and all knowledge about the world, but Descartes thinks that the senses can easily be doubted and so we need something further to justify that our senses are reliable.
Focusing on the above point, show how the philosopher’s unsatisfactory treatment of it reveals their position as flawed.
Example thesis: Hume’s position is that all knowledge is based on sense impressions, but as Descartes shows the senses can be unreliable and therefore Hume is mistaken to build his theory of knowledge on the senses.
