Describe the unique commonality of people and strategies in the 19th Century social movements that
gave rise to Prohibition. Chronicle the rise of the Anti-Saloon League and Wayne Wheeler’s strategies
to create a coalition in order to get the constitutional amendment passed allowing for national
prohibition. Describe how it happened.
Argue why it did not work and what the effects were on society. What lessons can we learn from this
today with respect to marijuana and other drugs? What conclusions (large ones) can we draw about
American politics from this episode in American History?
In answering all these questions be sure to give the reasons for your opinions. Even if you do not have
an opinion you should still analyze all possible scenarios. Also explain the likelihood of other
possibilities even if you do not believe they are possible. You are also invited to disagree and challenge
this professor in fact doing so reflects positively on you.
