General topic: What a Word Means
Write an essay about a word (or a phrase).
Choose a word or phrase that fascinates, disturbs, impresses or perplexes you.
You can focus on any word or phrase but a few broad categories of words are listed below:
A word you think is misused
A new word that is being proposed
A word that some would like to redefine
Here are a few points to consider for this essay:
Your thesis should be your assertion of your opinion, and you should support this thesis throughout the entire essay.
You should use personal examples—which may include examples from friends and family—to support your claims. Remember to be specific and detailed.
You must use at least one quotation from one of the op-ed essays —although you can use more—and you will introduce the quote and put the page number of the quote after the parentheses. For instance, you would write, “As Carol Dweck explains, “[insert her quote]” (4).
You should use at least one summary from two op-eds OR authoritative sourcs. Summaries require in-text citations and works cited entries.
Remember that you should use summary more than quotation.

Your essay should be 700-1000 words long; put the word count in parentheses after the final period.
