For this term’s single major assignment, you will write a long research essay on a topic of your own choosing. Initially, with my help and approval, you will choose a research question upon which to focus. We will spend the term advancing your draft of this essay through all the major stages of academic writing, including pre-writing, extensive research, building a working bibliography, creating a zero-draft, outlining and organizing, revising into a working draft, workshopping your draft through peer review, meeting with your writing advisor (the instructor) for one-on-one feedback on your revised draft, formatting, and preparing a “final” graded draft suitable for presentation and potential publication.
The completed draft of your research essay should include an effective title, introduce the topic with a provocative “hook,” present a short summary (no more than a few sentences) that also places your topic within its cultural and historical context. The introductory paragraph(s) must present a clear thesis statement and sketch out the argument to follow. The body paragraphs will present at least six to eight (6-8) of your research sources using complete signal phrases, share and analyze quotations and other evidence from your research, connecting that evidence to your main argument through interpretation and analysis. Your argument as a whole must establish and articulate the various criteria upon which your thesis is based (“framing” the argument) and include some rationale for choosing those particular criteria. Throughout your essay you will want to demonstrate your awareness of the current and past “conversation” about your topic, including reference to major trends of thought and key figures in the discourse. Your conclusion should connect the various parts of your analysis and argument to support your overall thesis, gesturing toward larger issues, and giving a sense of your argument’s importance to a new understanding of the topic.
This culminating project for English 102, the graded draft of this assignment must be word-processed, ten-to-twelve pages (3000-3500 words), formatted with header, page numbers, etc., all according to appropriate style guidelines such as MLA (see the Essay Formatting Guide). Your essay must include a “Works Cited” page listing all your research sources in alphabetical order with citations formatted according to proper MLA (or other) style requirements (see the OSLIS Citation Maker).
Your final draft of this Research Essay is due via the Assignment drop-box on Canvas on Monday, March 21, by 11:59pm (midnight). Late work may be penalized by one-half grade per 24-hour day (or portion thereof), and no essays will be accepted after midnight on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
