Women in Western Religion
OBJECTIVES
These papers are intended to get you to engage the texts we will be reading in an analytical, comparative way, and you should not do any outside research for them. Although you may pose questions as part of your analysis, the papers are not intended for you to simply ask questions. They should be carefully thought-out statements of opinion and observation, in dialogue with the texts we read and the views they offer.
The paper is not intended merely as an opinion piece but as an engagement of the readings to answer the questions provided. Consider on which points these sources of information converge and where they do not. What do you make of the contradictions between sources, if any?
Most important, your essay should have a central thesis, or statement you will try to illustrate the truth of (or a statement you will disprove). The point of this exercise is not to offer right or wrong answers per se; rather, you are to choose a point of view and present that point cogently and succinctly.
FORMATTING
Papers should be no more than 4 pages in length, double-spaced, with standard font no smaller than 11 point. Leave a 1” margin on all sides. No footnotes or endnotes, please.
***VERY IMPORTANT** whenever you quote directly or paraphrase (in short, whenever you use an idea, expression, or language that is not your own) use the format (Frymer-Kensky 1992: 12) in the body of the text. Please pay careful attention to this format; I will take off points for improper formatting as well as spelling errors (proofread your paper and PLEASE use spell check!) Please keep your citation of in class lectures to a minimum. Your paper should have no more than 3 of these types of citations.
The publication dates for all of the required materials on Blackboard are listed in the bibliography on the last page of your syllabus. The publication dates for the required texts are on pg. 3 of the syllabus. (I can attach or email to expert if needed) [i] driving institutional developments[ii] in religious communities have much to do with constructions of faith in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Taking this approach – that is, looking through the lens of material conditions – critically assess constructions of (ideal and non-ideal) faith as they relate to women in one of these traditions by comparing the views of two different authors whose works we have studied. In your essay, you should first focus on outlining the two arguments (here you should focus on the secondary literature, and NOT the scriptural materials we have been reading), and second on discussing the relevant material conditions driving institutional developments. From there you should develop your assessment of the authors’ views about depictions of women in sacred scripture, leaving your own views (should you choose to include them) for the conclusion of your paper. The point of this essay is to critically assess the views expressed in the secondary sources, so make that your primary research agenda.
