The Progressives believed that governments should actively promote the general welfare of Americans. Recognizing that industrial capitalism had produced social and economic inequities, the Progressives wanted government to regulate the financial system and to ensure that corporations did not become monopolistic. President Theodore Roosevelt’s New Nationalism featured a Progressive agenda that sought to curb corporate excesses, to promote conservation, and create national parks. Progressives also sought legislation that would protect children, workers, and consumers.
