The Civil War was the most devastating conflict in American history. The North had defeated the South and the Confederate states lay in ruin. Confederate currency was worthless; infrastructure destroyed; economy totally wrecked. Reconstruction refers to the process of bringing the southern states back into the Union. There are three constitutional amendments (13th, 14th, and 15th amendments) adopted during this Reconstruction period.
