In your professional life, using mathematical tools to help you create data visualizations can build your problem-solving skills and deliver results that meet high standards. Let’s say, for example, that you manage a doughnut shop, and the owner is considering investing in an expensive doughnut-making machine to keep up with increasing orders. For the most part, the machine makes all doughnuts a certain width, but customer reviews indicate that the machine doesn’t always work as expected.
You’re concerned that if the machine makes doughnuts too big, too often, the shop will end up losing money on wasted dough. You buy the machine and then using Microsoft Excel, you decide to record the widths of doughnuts made by the machine over time. Then, you plot the data into a simple graph to visualize the distribution (all the possible values) of those widths so you can see how often the machine is making donuts that are too big or too small.
Probability is also an important concept. A wide variety of occupations such as advertising, marketing, public relations, and sales regularly use probability to make crucial decisions in their lines of work. Before a product ever reaches the assembly line, for example, there are professionals making predictions about how much the company will probably sell, and gathering the data on the people who will probably buy it. You can use the same techniques as these professionals to gather reliable data, make predictions, and identify potential solutions about the problems you encounter in this course and beyond.

You have read about and practiced problems dealing with the mean, median, and mode, measures of variation, normal distribution, probability, and the law of large numbers. You now have an opportunity to test your skills on these concepts.
You can prepare by following these suggestions:
