In this paper I will be discussing the sickness of Hazel Grace Lancaster, a 16 year old with thyroid cancer that has spread to her lungs. In this film The Fault in Our Stars Hazel develops a relationship with Augustus Waters. Augustus Waters is also sick with osteosarcoma which caused him to lose his leg. Augustus Waters is the character we will focus on for the coping mechanisms for both his illness as well as Hazel’s illness. This paper will demonstrate that the main character Augustus was able to cope with his illness as well as Hazel’s illness with a calming and confident attitude. Augustus always was brave and tried to act as though he was living a healthy normal life with no illness.
In the Film The Fault in Our Stars two teenagers meet at a support group and bond over literature. They eventually fall in love. Hazel has thyroid cancer, she felt as though she would never be normal. She walked around with an oxygen tank, had short hair from cancer treatments and was home schooled. Hazel had a negative outlook about the world and her health. She just was waiting to die. She didn’t have any friends, she was miserable and felt all alone. She hated how her parents walked on eggshells around her. When Augustus came he treated her like a normal person that made her happy. Augustus has a best friend, he had conquered cancer once and although he had an amputated leg he tried his best to live a normal life. After bonding over literature and continuing to see each other, Augustus manages to get in touch with Peter Van Houten, the author of An Imperial Affliction and gives Hazel his email address. The author was located in Amsterdam and Hazel and Augustus made plans to fly there to get the answers to the end of the book which was left at a cliffhanger. Unfortunately Hazel ends up in the ICU but is persistent to go on this trip. Hazel and Augustus go on the trip together and Augustus confesses his love to Hazel. The trip is going wonderful and Hazel finally feels normal. Augustus made Hazel a better person; he made her want to fight to stay alive.
Unfortunately their happiness didn’t last forever. At the end of the trip Augustus tells Hazel devastating news. His cancer came back and it had spread everywhere. At the end Augustus passes away and Hazel is left completely heartbroken and feels so alone. Hazel and her parents go to the funeral, his friend mentions to Hazel that Augustus was writing something for her. The letter left for Hazel from Augustus was a Eulogy for Hazel because in the past she had asked him for one thinking she would die. Augustus coped with his illness as well as Hazel’s treatment with a positive outcome. He was so strong and just happy to live everyday. He didn’t want to waste his life away. He wanted to remember all he wanted was more time to help and impact people’s lives.
You will also need to have your paper checked for grammar. There are several places where the sentence structure needs correction. I put the comments on the side margin. Hope you can see them! Here is what I would like to see with the content: can you condense what you wrote to the essence of the movie? What is the main message? I see you chose Will, but it is really Hazel that has the most problems. You also left out why it was important to see that author, and what happened when they did. That came back around at the funeral. As a reader, I want to be drawn in. I want to care about the characters. Try something like this: “The Fault in Our Stars” describes the emotional challenges of two young lovers battling cancer with very different outlooks. The eternal optimist Augustus meets fatalistic Stella during a support group….” Here’s what you do. Go back and remove every detail that isn’t necessary. Then think about the critical moments, or turning points in the movie. Be sure to include those.
