Your assignment is
to write a 5-page paper on the different approaches to punishment in the United
States and throughout the world. Your paper must tie-in what you have learned
from the Seminar Class, the course books, and your research. The paper should identify core correctional
values and beliefs that may offer alternatives to conventional thinking on
incarceration.
In a paper of no
more than 5 pages, identify the critical issues dealing with punishment. The text of the paper should be typed,
doubled spaced, with 1-inch margins and page numbers. In addition to the text, the paper should
include a title page and bibliography for a total of 7 pages. Your paper should not include any bullets,
photos, graphs or diagrams. Quotes
should be brief and limited to supporting the point you are trying to
make. The paper should be stapled,
single sided, with size 12 point font. Your paper shall be hand in, not
emailed, by the date the paper is due.
APA style shall be used for this paper.
You will need to
find at least 6 academic sources for
this paper, two of which shall be from your class readings. Academic sources can include peer-reviewed
journal articles and books. The only
acceptable Internet sources are those which provide electronic journal articles
(Example: JSTOR). If you are not sure what
a peer-review journal article is, please see me or a reference librarian at the
Healy Library. Newspaper and magazine
articles are only to be used as supplemental sources beyond your six academic
sources. Ideally, the sources should be
no more than five years old (2016-2021), but some topics may require using
older materials. All term papers must be
turned in on time. A reduction in grade
(a grade level each day) will result in any paper that is submitted late. You are not
to use a paper from another course.
Please refer to the University’s Academic Honesty Policy and Procedures,
Appendix B of the student handbook, or contact me if you questions.
The paper should be
a well-integrated analytical review of research, scholarship, and
theories. In addition, your paper should
distinguish one philosophy from another; demonstrate why the idea is important,
and what the social impact is to the public. Be specific and detailed in your writing and with the identification
of scholarly sources. Please consider
the following questions in your paper:
1.
What are alternatives to historical correctional
philosophies in the United States?
Consider: Current Trends, Different Approaches, Alternative Sentences
2.
What do other countries do? Why?
Consider: Philosophies, Sentences, Laws, Policies, Practices, Facilities,
Programs
3.
What are the risks associated with alternative
philosophies?
Consider: To members of the Public, Communities, Criminal Justice, Policy
Makers
4.
