In this assignment, you will be introduced to the process of co-creating an emergent curriculum. By observing the children (Video 1 and 2) as they interact with the environment, with the materials, and with the adults and other children, we can begin to get an understanding of what kinds of experiences and materials we can provide to expand the children’s learning and development.

In this assignment, you will plan, and reflect upon a play area for children, based upon recorded observations of children at play. You will use the attached TEMPLATE document to complete this assignment. The document provided provides detailed instructions of what needs to be done. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to work through the process of this assignment. PLEASE NOTE: This assignment is NOT to be completed with children. In this assignment you are learning the process and using observations from videos in the Videatives database (attached).
You must:
· Complete two anecdotal observations and reflections that clearly demonstrate a common and pervasive interest from the selection of videos (above links)
· Identify a topic of interest from the observations
· Write a rationale for the topic, explaining why you have chosen that topic. This must be three to five sentences long.
· Create an introductory ‘web’ to document your topic. More details provided on the planning document. Review the attached Web PowerPoint for more information on observations, choosing a topic, and webbing.
· You will begin to plan and develop one play area (with four distinct activities), from one of the following curriculum areas:
o Water/granular (these are similar enough that you may only choose one of them to plan)
o Blocks
o Woodworking
o Manipulative Area – fine motor table activities
· Complete all of the planning section, including the holistic goals chart. Be sure to follow all instructions on the planning document.
· Create a visual display, following the information provided.

You will submit for grading ONE document containing all of the requirements. You must insert the photos into the document in the appropriate places, not attach them as separate files.
