Directions: Answer BOTH questions in detailed essay format – one essay per each question. Each essay should be a minimum of four paragraphs. A paragraph is at least five sentences. Essays should be based exclusively on the lecture PDFs and the textbook. NO OUTSIDE SOURCES should be used. All assignments must be turned in by May 20th.
1. Discuss the fundamental concepts of Sociolinguistics including: performance, competence, prescriptivism and descriptivism and the distinction between language and communication. Give examples.
2. Discuss the complex relationship between language and social power. Give specific examples where language is used to establish power through normalization and othering. Give examples from lecture as well as your own observations in society.
