Humanities- Magical Girls and Ghouls
Part 2: Create a Magical Contract
1) Yyou should create a 300 – 500 word magical contract. What do I mean by contract? Let me explain…
Create a magical being who works as a “magical contractor” like Luna or Kyubey. It is this being’s job to convince people to sign “magical contracts.” Consider all of the different series we have seen and how these magical contractors operate. Do you think it is right to ask young people to fight monsters in exchange for magical powers? How should a magical contractor behave? These are some questions to consider.
Once you have given these topics some thought, create a contract that answers the following prompts:
What kind of magical being is your character and what is their name?
What is their purpose in recruiting magical folk?
What are the terms of their contract? (ex. What does the recruit have to do in order to have magical powers?)
What is their role in the recruit’s new life as a magical person? (ex. Do they just give the recruit powers and then ghost them, do they act as a guide, etc…)
Ultimately, does your character think signing a magical contract with them is a good idea? Why or why not?
You should include 3 citations in your contract. These citations should come from Sailor Moon, Book 1 and they should be used to support your character’s perspective.
*Note: “Magical Folk” is my attempt at a gender-inclusive term for characters that fit into the magical girl genre. If you think of a better one, please share!
Be creative with this contract! You can make so many different types of magical contractors. They can be benevolent or villainous, a veteran contractor or a rookie, a reluctant recruiter or an eager one, etc… there really is no limit to the character you can create. If you want to write the contract in the first-person point of view, that is totally fine! The format of the contract is up to you, all I ask is that it is accessible.
Take the prompts seriously. Your answers should be appropriate and thought-out.
Points will be deducted for poor writing, lack of citations, and inappropriate responses that do not fit the prompts.
*Citation explanation: When I say “citation,” I am talking about direct quotes from the manga that are surrounded by quotation marks (“”) and contain the page number the quote was found on. I am also talking about any specific references to the manga that you make in your assignment.
Citation Examples:
A specific line from the manga: “Sailor V-chan… I wish I were her” (18).
A specific reference to a scene from the manga: On page 18, Usagi expresses her desire to be Sailor V because Sailor V does not have to study and gets to beat up bad guys.
