After Wertham made his famous argument about comic book delinquency in his 1954 book, Seduction of the Innocence, the comic book industry responded by creating the Comics Code Authority (CCA) in order
to regulate and censor comics. Do you think it is okay to censor comics (or books, in general), or does this violate the author’s freedom of speech? Today, there are still books (such as
Harry Potter, Huckleberry Finn, And Captain Underpants) that are being banned or challenged in Public Schools and libraries.Should U.S. schools listen and heed parental objections to certain books used as part of the curriculum? Does one parent who objects to a book have the right to ban the book’s use from the entire class, school, or public community library?
What would be some reasons for banning or censoring certain books or comic books? What would be some reasons against banning or censoring certain books or comic books?
Take a position on the issue and decide whether you believe one person has the right to restrict the
reading material of others. Focus on whether or not certain books should be banned from school libraries and/or public libraries.
