Expansion, development, and progress across the frontier of the far West hold a significant place in American culture. American media portrays the conquest of the West in television and film as a celebratory process from the perspective of Anglo-Americans. The viewpoint from the perspective of African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans is often quite different. In your discussion, offer your assessment of United States development of the Western region. The chapter also covers industrial development and examines the growth of cities in America. For this discussion, let’s assess four themes in this chapter. I like to call them the four “tions”: Industrialization, Urbanization, Immigration, and Transportation. These four themes are reflexive in nature, that is, each is linked to the others. A change in one impacts the others, in other words, we need to examine these themes as a whole to understand the United States during this time period.
