Write an essay on Spivak’s definition of the “subaltern”.overview, but it will play a larger role in your response paper, as you are asked to consider the role of silence in Othello. While a lot is said in Shakespeare’s play, there are many things that go unsaid as well. In fact, one may argue that Othello is, in some ways, a play of silence in which characters fail to speak some of the most important observations. Desdemona, for example, seems to be mute even in her own defense. Iago, for all he says and all the havoc that he wreaks, uses soliloquy in interesting ways that subvert his voice. This essay asks that you look for instances of silence and voice in order to make argument about whether or not Othello can be considered a subaltern play. In addition to your own analysis, include one scholarly article of your choice in which some aspect of “the subaltern” is discussed.
