Your research paper must be 4-6 pages in length. APA style is required. Make note that your cover page and References do NOT count toward the page total. You do not need to submit an abstract. You must cite the main text in our course by Ting-Toomey and Chung. You must creatively and clearly provide a minimum of two separate sources that connect with something discussed in your paper,

This assignment asks you to apply three key concepts from any chapter in the Interplay textbook. For example, from Chapter 1, you might select concepts such as the importance of studying intercultural communication, flexibility, and the staircase model; or from Chapter 7, you might select concepts such as intercultural nonverbal gestures, haptics, and time orientation; or from Chapter 10, you might select concepts such as individualism-collectivism relationship expectations, intercultural-intimate conflict obstacles, and relationship conflict resolutions.
Select a feature-length film released in one country and remade in another. For example:
La Femme Nikita (France)…………………………..Point of No Return (USA)
Children of Heaven (Iran)……………………………Homerun (Singapore)
Eat Drink Man Woman (Taiwan)…………………..Tortilla Soup (USA)
Il Mare (South Korea)……………………………….The Lake House (USA)
Infernal Affairs I, II, III (Hong Kong)……………….The Departed (USA)
My Sassy Girl (South Korea)…………………………My Sassy Girl (USA)
Abre Los Ojos (Spain)……………………………………………..Vanilla Sky (USA)
Let the Right One In…………………………………..Let Me In (USA)
[You are welcome to choose your own film(s) for analysis, but you may wish to consult with your professor prior to making your final decision.]
Watch the films, taking careful note of comparing each film on the communication exchange, nonverbal communication, translation of plot, overall meaning of the film, and your reaction to all your viewing. Select the same three key episodes from each film you feel are relevant to compare. Use these three episodes in your analytical movie review assignment. Ideally, the episodes you pick should have some fascinating parallels or contrasts.
To assist your focus in writing an organized paper, be sure to accomplish the following:
Movie synopsis: Introduce the movie and provide a rationale for choosing your film. Share which one was released first. Provide a brief summary or the main plot line and the key characters of the movie.
Scene 1 + analytical concept(s): Explain why you have selected this particular scene for analysis; provide a brief summary of the scene. Introduce and define the main concept you will be using to analyze this scene (and indicate what chapter it is from). Use the concept to analyze the scene with explanatory depth by comparing how both scenes worked . . . or did not work. What was lost in translation? Feel free to use specific dialog, nonverbal gestures, and examples from the scene.
Scene 2 + analytical concept(s): Explain why you have selected this particular scene for analysis; provide a brief summary of the scene.
Scene 3 + analytical concept(s): Explain why you have selected this particular scene for analysis; provide a brief summary of the scene. Intercultural / interethnic communication IMPLICATIONS: Please note any meaningful differences and similarities between the two films in relationship to your analytical concepts and present your interpretive findings in a systematic manner. CONCLUSION: What are your overall evaluations of each film? Favorable? Or unfavorable? What did you learn about language, context, and ICC challenges? What would you change in the remake? Would you create an ICC movie sequel? Conclude and stretch your creativity and imagination.
REFERENCES: Full citation of the two films, full cites from the UIC textbook, and full citations of a minimum of two additional sources.

Grading criteria will include, but is not limited to having a well-organized paper format / breadth and depth of interpretations + rich examples used / tight connection between ICC concepts, explanation, and analysis / inspiring ideas, originality, and new insights gained / persuasive and cogent writing style.
