1. Using Chapter 2 as a guide, discuss what an exhaustive study of gender must cover. In other words, what should researchers focus on: men, women, different cultures, different sexual orientations, gender identity stereotypes, etc.??
2. Within Chapter 3 pick two theories that help to explain our development of gender, compare and contrast these two theories. Then in your final paragraph explain to me your own theory of how gender develops, this may or may not be a combination of multiple theories or an exact theory that has been described.
3. Chapter 4 discusses the concepts of intersex and transsexualism (gender identity dysphoria). These concepts are often mixed up in populist thought. Explain the difference and the different ways that intersexuality may occur. Then give the more modern approach to intersex individuals (ie. Should parents pursue gender assignment with child immediately?)
4. Culturally there are different approaches to widowhood. Looking in Chapter 5, discuss the issues surrounding widowhood and be sure to highlight cultural differences.
5. Chapter 6 describes how the postindustrial family has changed over time. Describe how the traditional family model has changed or not changed in some circumstances. Be sure to read through Box 6.4 and pages 130-134. Finally, end your answer with your opinion of what a roles fathers and mothers should play: should household tasks be equally divided, what should parental leave look like in the US for both women and men?
6. Achievement between genders, traditionally favored men and today many believe that women still devalue their true capabilities. However, research is inconclusive except for a few themes. Describe these differences that do emerge in groups within the United States and other countries (see pages 154-155). Then describe ways in your opinion that we could change these differences particularly since they seem to be influenced by parental involvement.
