Over the course of the semester, we’ve studied a variety of films, focusing on the formal choices made by the directors and the broader themes explored by each work. Now, we will take the knowledge that we’ve gained and write an in-depth review of ONE of the films on our syllabus. To write an effective film review, you MUST:
• Introduce the work and provide enough summary so that your reader can follow your arguments. Remember that many people read reviews to determine whether or not they want to see a film in theaters, so you should NOT assume that your reader is familiar with the film you’re reviewing.
• Clearly state your opinion of the film in your opening paragraph and reiterate that opinion in your concluding paragraph. Think of this like a thesis statement in a typical academic essay.
• Directly reference specific elements of the film in effort to support your argument
• Tell the reader how you felt when watching the film, and why you felt that way. Was it entertaining, thrilling, frightening, boring, depressing, etc.?
• Evaluate the film in the context of AT LEAST two of the key terms that we’ve discussed thus far this semester (Exposition, Suspension of Disbelief, Mis-en-Scene, Diegetic Vs. Non-diegetic sound, etc.).
