Unit 2 Essay —Analytic Assignment (6-7 pages)
For this assignment, students will craft a thesis-driven, analytic essay. You may use the following questions as prompts, or as jumping off points for what you want to write about:
1.Explain how Green’s depiction of Violet Strange help her illuminate forces that deprive women in general and, more specifically, women writers and narrators of both authority and agency? How does Violet Strange manage to establish her credibility as an investigator of crime, both with characters and with readers? How is her position akin to that of the author who attempts to tell credible stories?
2. Choose two-three problems to put in conversation with one another. How do they seem to be speaking together about a particular idea or issue?
3. Consider the significance of the literary detective in the Victorian Era/ the early 20th century. What major factors influenced their rise in popularity? How does the female detective complicate or revise the role of the male detective?
Your essay must contain a clear thesis that articulates an answer to one of the aforementioned questions, use textual evidence throughout, and persuade your reader of your position through thoughtful close-reading. Support your argument with at least 2 credible sources. Essays will be graded on the strength of the argument put forth, the use of relevant primary and secondary evidence, organization and coherence, and MLA format.
