Use the provided planning template from the Mesmer textbook to design your lesson. Create a decodable text for the ‘Read It’ portion of your lesson using Bookcreator. Create an interactive slide activity (using Google Slides) for students to complete as independent practice following your lesson. Record yourself performing your teaching demonstration (around 10 minutes or so in length). Decide if you want to design a First Words lesson or a Beyond First Words lesson. 2. Choose a subunit topic for your lesson (see the table on pp. 22-23). An example of a subunit topic is We are Family or R the Robber. 3. Choose ONE phonics target from your selected subunit. For example, you could spend weeks teaching the We are Family subunit. We are only designing one lesson, so you need to choose one specific target such as short a (-at, -an) or short i (-ip, -in). For First Words, see the table on pp. 136-139. For Beyond First Words, see the table on pp. 182-184. 4. Review the lesson planning template and activities (in the book, through online resources, etc) to help you build your lesson. Remember– Beyond First Words has a different planning template. When you are ready to create your lesson, download the planning template. First Words Lesson Planning Template, see the materials on pp. 121-123.
