Assignment:
Compare and contrast research with a news article that describes a conflict in a specific country or region (city, province, state) of a country.
Your article can be no older than January 1st, 2021.
Main objective: to show that you can make and explain connections between what you read in the news and what you research.
Conflict:
A conflict is a state of disagreement or competing views about an issue or event. Your news article may only express one side of the issue or event, but in that case your job is to determine what a competing or different view could be.
What Are You Researching?
You are researching what causes or what helps your reader understand the conflict. That is, you’re trying to explain the different perspectives that connect with the news article’s issue or event—the values, beliefs, concepts, history, cultural background that help us understand the different points of view of the event/issue.
What Can my News Article Be About?
Your news article can be about any event or issue, so long as you can explain how this issue or event is part of a conflict. Examples of such conflicts could include: public sculptures honoring a historical figure, new mandates, new laws or old laws, changes to public education, new or old cultural trends, eating practices, new taxes and new technologies.
Providing you can identify at least TWO sides or points of view on a particular event/issue in your news article, you have found an appropriate topic.
Steps of writing:
1. Summarize your news article, focusing on the topic (or topics!) that it highlights. Explain the point of view or information that your article provides about this topic and, briefly, whether the research supports or does not support your reading. (1-2 page)
2. Summarize the research that explains one or more views in your news article’s story. Be sure to provide cross-textual analysis, in which you connect quotations from the research to quotations from your news article or to quotations from a different research article. In this way, you will compare and/or contrast the views of your different readings. (3-5 pages).
