You will select one of the philosophical articles for a deeper analysis. With the article you select, you will identify a single sentence that is of philosophical significance and that you either disagree or agree with (see below).
Please note you must also do Step 4 below for Position Paper #2.

Each philosophical position paper should be 500-800 words and written in a format appropriate for a philosophy essay (see below). It is okay to go over this limit, if you need the space:
In the introduction of your paper (or at the top of the page), quote your chosen sentence and explain the context. That is, tell me what the sentence: Means? Or, Describes? Or, Argues? Remember the “Principle of Charity.”
Next, establish the philosophical significance of the sentence you chose. First, tell me which branch of philosophy the sentence falls under, and briefly exlpain why. This will involve describing the branch of philosophy. Second, pick one of the following two routes: (1) explain how the quote you chose is significant for the authors main argument? How is it significant? For instance, if they are wrong about what they say in the sentence, how does it affect their article?
OR (2) explain the significance of the quote you chose in general (i.e. tell me why else, the quote you chose, might be significant. Is it significant to something that may be outside the scope of the article?.)For instance, if they are wrong about what they say in the sentence, how does it affect a larger issue?
Critically evaluate the claim you have identified, and whose significance you have established. In other words, explain why the claim is inaccurate or weak or simply wrong. This will require the most work, and should occupy the bulk of your paper. To earn full-points for critical evaluation you must (1) explain your disagreement/agreement (your argument), (2) provide a counter argument to your argument (i.e. what might the author, or someone who disagrees with you, say in response to you?), (3) Your rejoinder (i.e. what do you say back, to defend your original argument?)
