An example might be “This research project will investigate the influence of CEO compensation on organizational performance.” Note the focus of the research is not on CEO compensation (the independent variable) or on organizational performance (the dependent variable). Instead the focus of the research is to “test” the relationship between the IV and DV. To successfully complete this assignment, write your research proposition in a MS Word file in which you:
Write an introduction to your proposal (but do not label it “Introduction”). The introduction will briefly state the topic, purpose, and significance of your study in one to three paragraphs (try to get your first paragraph to “hook” the reader with an interesting statistic, a compelling story, etc.).
Define the IV and DV.
State how you will “test” the influence of the IV on the DV.
Propose at least one hypothesis (or at least one research question).
Summarize any literature you used to develop your research proposition (cite at least two sources) in a section entitled Literature Review. Your first proposal assignment must have a title page but no Table of Contents or an Abstract. The Table of Content and the Abstract will be included in the final paper. The proposal must adhere to APA style (the 7th edition of the APA Manual). continue to develop your proposal which you started in Week 1 by developing your research proposition. For the “Proposal” assignment in Week 2 you will develop your literature review and synthesis. First you need to locate at least 10 sources (this may include the sources you used in Week 1) which have previously studied your research proposition. For example, if your research proposition is “This research project will investigate the influence of CEO compensation on organizational performance,” then locate 10 studies that discuss CEO compensation, organizational performance, and the relationship between the IV and DV. To successfully complete this assignment create a section labeled Literature Reviewand write a review followed by a synthesis (i.e., an integration of the the studies you cited) to the MS Word file you started last week. Continue to use APA style, make the corrections I suggested last week, and make certain you conclude with a synthesis of the findings of the previous research. Your sources must be listed in a Reference section following APA format. You should have completed your proposal draft to include the proposition, literature review, and Method section. Now you must complete the following to do the results section.
Create a section labeled Results. This section describes your data recording and analysis process. Most studies will have five sub-sections (Data Recording; Reliability, Validity, and Bias Checks; Descriptive Statistics; Test of Hypotheses/Questions; Exploratory Analyses). This part of your study should be consistent with the earlier sections (i.e., it should fit the research approach and method you selected). See the Sample Proposals in Course Resources for guidance (there are three proposals: one for an experiment with a survey, one for a qualitative study, and one for a meta-analysis). Be sure to describe the relevant data that will be collected to support your hypotheses and answer your research questions. Show what results must occur from the data analysis to support each of your hypotheses or answer your questions.Add the Table of Contents (TOC) and the Abstract to your final paper. The TOC does not require page numbers, but this is highly recommended. Remember, the Abstract is a summary (250 words maximum) of the entire paper (brief introduction, research proposition, method, results, and conclusion). Do not submit your proposal until you have used the constructive criticism of your seminar group members to make improvements in your original draft (submitted to the seminar group for critiques and feedback). Minimal expectations for you proposal include:
Clearly stated research proposition with the variables operationally defined.
Literature review and synthesis of at least 10 previous research studies/cases that have been summarized and synthesized relative to your proposition.
Description of your research design and method(s) for data collection.
Description of your data recording and analysis process.
Discussion of the meaning of your results, how your findings will be a contribution to current knowledge, limitations of the study, directions for future research, and likely implications and/or applications of the study.
Reference section.
Appendices, Tables, and Figures as needed. Note that proposal drafts must be in APA style and free of errors or writing problems. Proposals with typos, writing and grammar problems, or APA mistakes will lose points for clarity and organization and this will adversely affect your grade.
