Assignment
You will be composing an annotated list of
children’s literature that can be integrated into a content area of your
choice. You will be pasting this in a Google Slides document.
Step 1: Send me the content area topic that you
will be covering- science, math, social studies, P.E., health, technology, so
that we have one person covering each topic.
Step 2: Search for children’s literature
including at least three each of classics, narratives, informational texts, and
award winners. At least half of your choices should be books that have been
written in the last five years. Once you have collected a total of 20 books
minimum, place them into groups of topics or grade levels, such as for science,
you could have biology, physics, etc. or drill down further to animals, plants,
etc.
Step 3: Write up your annotated bibliography.
Your list should include the citation at the top of each listing,
then a one paragraph description of the content of the book and an analysis of
the quality and usefulness, and one paragraph describing how it could be tied
in to a lesson in the content area. Remember that we are talking about
integration not enhancement- more on that next week from Deb Secord. You should
add the grade level and reading level of the book. Remember that you could be
reading the book to the children (higher level) or they may be reading it themselves
(at their grade level). Be sure to state the category as above in step 2
(classic, award winner, etc.)
Example:
Science
Physics
Keats, E.J.
(1962). The snowy day. New York, NY: Pantheon.
Grade level: K-3
Genre: Fiction
Ezra J. Keats wrote
and illustrated this picture book is about a boy named Peter who wakes to find
out that it has snowed. He is most famous for this book and won the Caldecott
award for illustrations. Peter takes advantage of mother nature and
investigates the snow. On another day, Peter sets out on an adventure with a
friend. Well written with beautifully colored illustrations. The author makes
this book racially diverse. (expand on this)
This book could be
used in a science class in grade 1 to investigate the characteristics of snow versus
water versus ice. I would use the standards ___ for science and ____ for
writing. The challenge would be to write the results of an experiment making
snow. etc. I would read the book to the class the first time and pull out the
necessary vocabulary for science class. (expand on this)
Caldecott Medal Winner.
Step 4: Comment on your peers’ submissions.
