OVERVIEWAs you have probably noticed throughout your life, misconceptions and misunderstandings abound on various topics. This is especially true in what UCI logic and philosophy of science professors Cailin O’Connor and James Owen Weatherall call “The Misinformation Age” in their 2019 book The Misinformation Age: How False Beliefs Spread. While misinformation and “fake news” are nothing new, social media and the internet have certainly contributed to the proliferation and spread of “alternative facts.” Sometimes, a misinformed view is relatively harmless, like believing that a tarantula bite can kill a person when, in reality, tarantula bites cause no lasting injury and the spider itself is quite docile.
