For this piece, there are 2 portions the first being a podcast or movie review and second being a writing assignment. Pretty simple work, I’m simply pressed for time.
Podcast review instructions:
Podcasts have become increasingly popular in the past decade. For example, journalism majors may enjoy perusing the audio choices on NPR’s “On the Media” podcast. If you are not familiar with how to locate podcast options, you can read about how to listen to podcasts. The New York Times has a list of seven podcasts for the movie buff.
For this discussion forum, you will provide a review in the form of a podcast. Based on studies in this lesson and the previous one, you have two options for content:
Review a movie that has been released in the past year (either through streaming or in theaters). Briefly cover the plot (without giving away the ending), themes, videography and overall quality.
OR
Review a professional podcast that you could recommend to others. Clearly describe the podcast’s content and format, and provide a link or connection info to your selected podcast.
Ideally, you will provide an engaging two-minute review that your classmates will want to hear. You have the option to plan your review as a conversation with a friend, but this is not required.
Prepare a rough script or outline in advance and time it for approximately two minutes. You have a variety of ways to submit your audio, including simply recording it on a smartphone and submitting it as an mp3 file. For more details, use the link titled “Audio/Video Submission” in the left-hand course menu.
I’m leaving it up to the writer to select the podcast/movie to review. Completely your preference. The only thing specific I ask is for you to possibly put your thoughts in bullet form… if possible.
Writing portion:
This assignment is in two parts. Answer each part in approximately 200 words (total of approximately 400 words for the entire assignment — typed and double-spaced). Submit the assignment in a single .doc or .docx file, and clearly label each section as PART A and PART B.
PART A – Visit the Movie Review Query Engine (mrqe.com) and the recommendation site Rotten Tomatoes (rottentomatoes.com). Summarize the buzz at these sites about a current or upcoming movie. What is the basis for this coverage? How might the content on these sites affect audience members’ perceptions of the movie?
NOTE: Be forewarned that occasionally reader posts on the discussion boards may contain some profanity. This is also a good time to examine the issue of how the internet allows anything to be published, even if there are no credible sources backing up the information.
PART B – The movie industry has evolved through numerous changes in technology, such as the VCR, the digital video recorder, the DVD, and movie streaming. How has the industry reacted to these new technologies? What do you think the future of movies will look like? Support your response with evidence from the assigned content in this lesson, and you can also include observations based on personal experience. You are especially encouraged to use concepts from Brent Renaud’s audio for support.
Do not compose each essay as a single paragraph. You should outline your content in advance so that you plan no more than four sentences per paragraph, but you will submit only the essays and not the outline. You can use informal citations to clearly show the source for any information that is not your own; you are not required to use MLA or APA style. More information and examples are included in the “Citing Sources” link of the course menu.
