PROJECT: MIDTERM ASSIGNMENT
Apply the relevant guidelines & methods to an assigned passage: ___2 Corinthians 12:9____.
I. PRELIMINARY WORK
We prefer this “grunt work” to be typed [but it is not required]; don’t use Bible commentaries or study Bibles; document your sources; number pages; attach after the E&E Statement and Exegetical Summaries.
1 Develop an Annotated Mechanical Layout of the assigned passage (only).
Add key elements from steps 2-6.
2 List and analyze significant elements of Historical, Cultural and Physical background; use the style from the HCP Exercise. Include not just the passage but also its immediate context. Document your sources! Include key findings on the mechanical layout, step 1.
3 Do an in-depth study of two important words in the assigned passage. First, you should determine the semantic range of the word. Then you should study your word in secondary sources in order to confirm or challenge your own research. Be sure to document those sources!
Add significant finding to the mechanical layout, Step 1.
Word #1: __Sufficient, __ Word #2: __Power, and Boast____
4 Context: Identify and analyze the Purpose and the Plan/Outline of the Book. How does the assigned passage relate to the subsequent contents of the book? Look at two commentary outlines (at least 2) and skim the book. Add significant data to the Layout.
5 Outline the assigned passage and its Immediate Context).
6 Identify & interpret any Figurative Language in the assigned passage; add to layout.
II. EXEGETICAL SUMMARIES
Provide four typed outlines (but using complete sentences) which summarize the significant findings of the preliminary work.
A. Historical, Cultural and Physical Setting, based on work in section 2.
B. Word meaning and figurative language, based on work in sections 3 and 6.
C. Thought structure, based on work in sections 1 and 5.
D. Context, based on work in section 4 and 5.
III. EXEGETICAL/EXPOSITORY STATEMENT
First, write a “summary paragraph,” summarizing background and context information. Second, rewrite the verse [the actual verse should be in bold font; see the sample] with a built-in “mini-commentary” explanation based on your research. Exegetical and Expository refer to the same material from different perspectives: “exegetical” to facts and meaning derived from the passage and “expository” to communicating these to others, “exposing” an audience to the Scripture. An efficient method to prepare this statement is to continually add material from your study to the Mechanical Layout, Preliminary Step 1. Third, in a “concluding paragraph,” offer some reflections on what this passage contributes and how it might apply to Christian living today.
THE FINAL PRODUCT
What to hand in and how to arrange it
When you hand in your Midterm, it should be structured like this:
First, E&E Statement; second, Exegetical Summaries; third, all preliminary work.
