Part 1:
From Chapter 6 in the text, find a quote that can be associated with a real experience (of yours, a celebrity, or someone you know) about something that resonates with you. First, list the topic heading. Then leave a paragraph space and relate a detailed, specific application of what you have quoted. The quote can be a sentence or part of a paragraph. The second part can be posted anytime after the first part is completed.
Go to book Understanding Development A LifeSpan Perspective and go on week 6 and thats what chapter youre going to be reading to answer this discussion
EXAMPLE
Here is a (real) example from a different textbook that is 337 words.
Section 13.7, Skating and Cycling
“Cycling injuries account for another 207,000 emergency room visits each year among those aged 14 and under. Children will, of course, continue to engage in these activities, but as they become more actively involved in cycling and skating, protective measures need to be emphasized. Head injuries, in particular, can have lifelong consequences. It is estimated that proper helmet use while skating and cycling can reduce catastrophic head injuries by as much as 88% and fatalities by as much as 85% (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2013; Mills & Gilchrist, 2008).”
It is amazing to me that there are that many injuries, especially considering that there were probably many more that didn’t require an emergency room visit. I am absolutely in favor of the helmet law in California for children, but I am not sure how I feel about laws requiring bike safety equipment for adults (there are none in California by the way). I understand the danger and the threat to the public if I get injured. If it’s someone else’s fault, is it fair for them to have to pay more because I didn’t wear a bike helmet while riding or wrist guards while skating? Or is it fair for the public or my insurance company to pay for my injuries if it’s my fault?
I like the idea of riding my bike without a helmet. In fact, before the pandemic, I rode over 20 miles to work and back. And because I ride really fast on my electric bike and don’t love helmets, I invested in an airbag “helmet” that actually protects better than a traditional bike helmet. Even though I mostly felt safe riding to work, I knew intellectually that people do indeed have traumatic head injuries as a result of cycling. I am not very worried about causing an accident, but am quite worried that there are drivers and pedestrians who don’t watch for and don’t respect bike riders.
On the other hand, when I ride slowly at the beach I still don’t use a helmet. For me, it’s a matter of cost/benefit and risk assessment. When I ride slowly at the beach I know that the odds of a major head injury are considerably reduced so I increase my risk by choosing not to wear a helmet.
With regards to my children, I always insisted that mine wore helmets when they were younger, and I always wore one when I rode with them. The helmet law took effect after my son was born, but he wore a helmet even before the law.
