Describe in your own words what you think the Apostle Paul is saying in the passage of scripture for today about what sin is and how it works in people’s lives. How is sin related to behavior? How is sin related to our human condition? Why are we trapped by it? Provide an example.
If there is such a thing as sin from God’s point of view, it means that there are certain choices, behaviors, attitudes, etc. that are right or wrong (because they go against God’s good design for us and who He is in His nature). It means that there is such a thing as truth, not just preferences or things we can excuse because of our environment, upbringing, inclinations or past hurts. It means that God is calling us to a better place that is free from sin. Repentance is the idea of agreeing with God about sin; that something is wrong with us and our behavior and that we are willing to turn to His ways and ideas and not our own.
Based in these ideas, what do you think the role of repentance is in social work even if we don’t call it that?
What theories and practices can you think of that ask people to turn from behaviors, attitudes or practices that are hurtful or wrong?
What are some of the tools social workers use to help people move away from these things toward change?
