From the late nineteenth through the mid-twentieth century, the federal government maintained boarding schools for American Indian children. The schools were often built away from reservations and served students from a mixture of tribes. One of the first was the Carlisle Indian School, the subject of this discussion. You have three types of documents to analyze. Document A is an outsider′s perspective, a newspaper account of the school written by a presumably white reporter. Document B is the perspective of an administrator, the head of the school. The last two documents are from students at the school. Document C was written by a student while at the school. Document D was written by a former student. Carlisle School Documents Your task is to answer the following questions, using all four of the documents as evidence. What was the purpose of the Carlisle Indian School? How successful was the school at achieving its purpose? What was the school′s impact on its students?
