What is the difference between total sugars and added sugars?

Added sugars: are sugars that are added to what’s already there. basically, added sugars are sugars introduced to products and or food to add more flavor or extend shelf life.

Total sugars: are sugars that include both added sugars and natural sugars.

How do the total sugars and added sugars differ in these two bars?

The big difference I see is that the RX bar with just natural sugars and the Nutri grain bar has a lot of added sugars and natural sugars in it, the Rx bar has more sugar in it by 18g and the Nutri grain is 13g.

What are the biggest differences in the ingredient lists in these bars?

Nutri Grain has a total of thirty-eight ingredients to make the bar taste good and the blueberry Rx bar only has six ingredients.

Choose one ingredient that you have not heard of from the list from either bar:

I have never heard of the ingredient dextrose.

Explain to the class what the ingredient is.

Dextrose is a type of simple sugar derived from corn and it is also used in food and medicine

What is its purpose?

Dextrose is identical to glucose which is the sugar found in the bloodstream it is used to treat very low blood sugar most often in people with Diabetes Mellitus. The dextrose is also given by injection to treat insulin shock, another purpose is it’s used as a sweetener such as fructose corn syrup.

Brittany Lewis’s Discussion Post:

Hi everyone,

*What is the difference between total sugars and added sugars? How do the total sugars and added sugars differ in these two bars?

Total sugars is the complete amount of sugars present in a product including natural suagrs like carbohydrates and added sugars which is sugars added by manufacturers for flavoring (Heart.org, 2021). The total sugars in both of these bars are pretty close in numbers, only off by a couple of grams. But the amount of total sugars differs greatly, with the Nutrigrain bar containing 12 grams of added sugars, making the total sugars of the RX Bar significantly less than the Nutrigrain.

*What are the biggest differences in the ingredient lists in these bars?

The amount of ingredients in the Nutrigrain bar is almost 10 times longer than that of the RX Bar. The Nutrigrain contains alot of preservatives and added flavorings while the ingredients in the RX Bar are simpler and natural.
