What do folks mean by “decolonizing” bruja as a term and/or as a practice?

Collectively, the readings for this module focus on the reclamation of the term “bruja.” Some advocate for the need to decolonize and give the term back its power. Others talk about it’s use as an affirmation of the erotic as outlined by previous readings (as in way more than physical/sexual eroticism) as it connects to the ongoing work of the curandera as healer. Some have talked about the problematic pieces of overemphasizing bruja as a trending pop culture phrase without a true connection to the work itself.
With those readings in mind, connect back to course themes by exploring the following questions:
What do folks mean by “decolonizing” bruja as a term and/or as a practice?
How does the emphasis on knowledge and healing reconnect us to the phrase “women as givers of life”?
What might be problematic about how we use these terms? (Either before reclamation and/or after reclaiming the term – take your pick and roll with it)
Some reminders – you don’t have to get it all right. Your response doesn’t have to be perfect and it doesn’t have to be it’s own research paper. Simply respond with your thoughts and reactions to the questions. Each of our insights connect us to a bigger picture of how we are collectively making sense of these ideas. So, in short: there is no right or wrong here. Do remember to be respectful with one another as you connect across responses. Read each other’s comments, react to each other, agree, etc. Have thoughts. Speak your truth.
