Peofessor’s Prompt:

Part I – Board Meeting
Attend a local school board, city council, or the OC Board of Supervisors meeting. Ideally, I’d like you to attend in your own community, but you are welcome to choose the local government agency that interests you for this assignment. Prior to the pandemic, many agencies didn’t provide video or remote access to their meetings which made it difficult for constituents to be informed and engaged since they had to physically attend the meeting. It will be interesting to see what happens when the restrictions are limited and if they’ll revert to not providing remote access to these sessions.
First, you’ll need to research when and how the meeting will be available to the public. Are the trustees or council members meeting remote or in person? Get a copy of the agenda so you know what will be discussed.
If there’s a topic on the agenda you’d like to comment on, you can submit “public comments” at local meetings.
Some meetings last for hours — you only need to watch 90 minutes of the meeting to get credit for an entire meeting — some drag on while others are over quickly.
In your post, identify the city and board meeting you attended and why you chose it.
Describe how accessible is the information about the meeting and how to find the agenda, submit public comments, and watch the meeting live or later. It seems that some agencies make it difficult to find this information, burying it in their websites so few would ever know it existed. How could they improve this?
Summarize the content of the meeting itself – what was discussed and how did the council conduct itself during the meeting. Was there an item on the agenda that generated a lot of debate or interest? How did they interact with the public, staff and resources members who also attend the meeting, and each other.
Describe the public engagement at this meeting. Were there many public comments at the beginning of the meeting. Could you tell how many viewers there were during the meeting? Is there a way for residents to engage at the meeting itself?
