Assignment
Your assignment is to write a paper of no less than four (4) and no more than six (6) pages, on one of the following questions:
1. The subtitle of the book is “A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures”. What is the clash of cultures that this refers to? In your essay, define what you see as the clash of cultures and provide at least three specific examples of how this “clash” affected Lia Lee’s medical care over the course of her lifetime. Be sure to define the two cultures you are writing about.
2. Explain how the book can be used to teach doctors to be culturally-sensitive? Select at least three examples that can be used for teaching, and explain why you chose them and how they could be used in medical training to increase cultural sensitivity.
3. As in American Westerns, we need to find the “bad guys” and the “good guys” – that is, we like to assign blame when bad things happen. Who are the bad guys and the good guys in this book? Give at least three examples of this over the course of Lia’s lifetime. In each example, from what/whose cultural perspective is bad and good guy being defined?
