AP Comparison Analysis of In Cold Blood and “A Hanging”
As the summary exercise for these two works, I would like you to write an essay wherein you
examine the arguments presented by both writers relative to their positions on execution.
Both Orwell and Capote deal with the controversial issue. Though different in their approach,
context, and style their focus still is clearly on the condemned men and those directly involved
in the executions. It is through these scenes and characters that the writers attempt to
influence the readers’ point of view.
Discuss and present both implicit and explicit evident to support your position on
the intent of both works, how the writers attempt to manipulate and influence readers’
emotions, and evaluate which work is more effective in communicating its purpose. What
rhetorical strategies do you see in play that also lend themselves to this intent?
This assignment is an argument as well as an analytical study. Your must have a thesis that
clearly presents your position. Rhetorical analysis is expected but does not have to be the
principle focus in your response. You may also consider any and all additional material and
discussion points we have employed in our class study of both works. There isn’t a “right
answer” here. I’m interested in your opinion and how you argue it. I also expect that the
writing level be at an AP standard. Proofread your drafts – watch how you use pronouns –
check ss and punctuation.
