War poems: “Dulce et Decorum Est,” “Atrocities,” “Harry Patch,” “Hitler’s First Photograph,” and “The End and the Beginning,” Analyze the speaker from 2 of the poems in this unit. In your essay, you may examine how point-of-view and tone (or setting, irony, conflict, imagery, symbolism, etc.) contribute to the overall development of the speakers, or you may want to discuss the speakers’ motivations for his/her actions. Make sure you tie the speakers/poems together with a common theme/topic/symbol. Do not assume the speaker is the same person as the author. Using 2 poems , analyze a chosen theme (examples include: the illusion of glory in war, death, brutality, morality vs. reality, the evil within the human heart, the affects of war and destruction), etc… Make sure you explain why this is relevant to your understanding of the poems.
